The Unchanging Christ

A Poem

By J. Aaron White

How did our parents hear his steps,

In the garden as they fell?

The image of the unseen God,

He’s always been Immanuel.

Who dined with Abram by the tree,

And Sodom’s riot quelled?

The judge of all the earth he is,

He’s always been Immanuel.

What stranger maimed poor Jacob’s hip,

Though his name he wouldn’t tell?

He teaches sinners who to fear,

He’s always been Immanuel.

How did they see God’s fire and cloud,

When wrath on Egypt fell?

Eyes that see the unseen God,

He’s always been Immanuel.

What Angel cheered weak Gideon,

And urged the death of Baal?

His altar says, “The Lord is Peace,”

He’s always been Immanuel.

How did Zechariah see,

The Angel silence hell?

Plucking sinners from the fire,

He’s always been Immanuel.

When Joseph woke from dreaming,

Did he run to tell?

The virgin shall conceive a Son,

They’ll call his name Immanuel.
